چکیده

Staphylococcal food poisoning is caused by ingestion of enterotoxins preformed in the food contaminated essentially through human manipulation or raw material obtained from animals. Although coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus is the main agent responsible for food intoxication, some researches emphasise that coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are able to produce staphylococcal enterotoxins and may be a potential cause of food poisoning. In the present study CNS were isolated from foods and the toxigenic capacity of the strains determined. A total of 88 food samples were analysed and 22.7% were positive for CNS strains. Staphylococcal counts ranged from 3.0 x 10 to 1.4 x 10 CFU/g or mL of food examined. S. epidermidis predominated among the isolates (40%). Further isolates included S. xylosus (20%), S. warneri (20%), S. saccharolyticus (15%), and S. hominis (5%). Four isolates were positive for enterotoxin genes, as detected by polymerase chain reaction, with sea being the predominant gene. Although no enterotoxin production was detected by the reverse passive latex agglutination method, the data showed that the toxigenic capacity of CNS should not be ignored, requiring investigation of this group of microorganisms in food.

The occurrence of enterotoxigenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus in foods.

It has generally been accepted that enterotoxin production is confined to coagulase-positive staphylococci, although the isolation of enterotoxigenic coagulase-negative strain has been reported. 1.2.3.4 Coagulase-positive staphylococci which produce enterotoxins have been found in 96.2 percent, 5 92 percent, 6 44 percent, 7 or 95 percent 8 of the strains isolated from food products involved in ...

A study of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from bovine mastitis for the presence of penicillin and methicillin resistance-encoding genes in the north west of Iran

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are often associated with bovine mastitis and may be resistant to antimicrobial therapy. The aim of the current study was to investigate the presence of blaZ (responsible for penicillin resistance) and mecA (responsible for methicillin resistance) genes among 108 CoNS belonging to 9 different species isolated from bovine mastitis in seven dairy herds (H1-...

Detection of Classic Enterotoxin Genes and Coagulase Gene Typing of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated from Raw Cow Milk in Isfahan

Background and Aims: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is considered as one of the most dangerous pathogenic bacteria due to the production of extracellular toxins. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of S. aureus and to characterize the recovered strains for their enterotoxin-producing genes in raw cow milk. Materials and Methods: During 9 months duration of the s...

Identification and biotyping of coagulase positive staphylococci (CPS) in ripened French raw milk cheeses and their in vitro ability to produce enterotoxins

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are exoproteins which, when produced in food that is then ingested by humans, give rise to symptoms of acute gastroenteritis [2]. Several types of staphylococcal enterotoxins have been identified on a serological basis and are named SE A through U (SEA through SEU) with SEA to SEE being the most frequently encountered due to there detection by usual standard ki...
